I’m Sorry

This is one of my works of poetry from the late 2000’s. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Well it’s been said I’m pretty stubborn
That I govern my life with a head that’s hard as diamonds
Would that be why whatever I do I’m always shining?
Well to prove I’m not behind the times
It would behoove me to choose now
To say to all of you:
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry my decisions are stemming
From my own search for truth
And not the lemmings
That came before me.
I’m sorry I question authority
And that you’re boring me
When all you can talk about is Reality T.V.,
Salary caps in the league,
And the latest Rap CD
Please!
My bad I don’t spend all my time
Keeping up with the fads,
But still stay clad in fresh apparel
I’m sorry I keep to myself
‘Cause y’all like crabs in a barrel;
Creeping
Seeking to hold me down
Drown me like a weak swimmer
Crossing the New England Sound.
Sorry I’m tossing out the trash.
You know those of you who choose to try to bruise my ego
And it’s all ‘cause you’re emo about my success.
You stress no matter how minor my accomplishment
And you’re astonished when
I’m barely fazed beyond initial shock.
Sorry your superficial world was rocked, fool,
When I ushered you out,
“Don’t let the door hit you!”

Yeah, the onus is on me, girl
Thought it was a bonus to have me be
Honest and up front;
No need to excessively style or stunt.
I’m blunt at times with my candor
‘Cause I’m trying to hand you
Truth
And empower you through it.
I’m sorry I try to protect you,
Help direct you,
And not disrespect you.
And, yes,
I will put you in check
If needed.
But how do you see it?
That’s how we ended up defeated.
You can’t feel it; that we have to bleed for it.
You know, work for it.
But that’s my bad that I’m committed,
Outfitted for the endurance run,
In the likeness of God’s Son.
I’m sorry I support you;
Want to see you fly so we can soar.
It’s my fault I don’t treat you like a whore;
Instead, I seek to strengthen you from the core.
I’m sorry I got bored with your unnecessary drama.
I’m sorry, I was taught better by my mama.
I’m sorry I tried to care for you,
Separate us from the world’s chaos,
And take us to peace above.
I’m sorry I tried to show you love…

  1. I find it interesting that this was written in the late 2000’s but we can still find many connections to relationships today, in late-2022. Great piece!
